Unfortunately, trying a chair out is not always possible, unless there’s a nearby office supply store with a good selection. Like the $1,000-plus chairs we recommend, this one—designed and built in Canada—offers tons of configuration options, comes with a 12-year warranty, and feels built to last. The chair we tested includes a wide range of ergonomic adjustments, and even has some unusual features like armrests that can spin 360 degrees, an inflatable lumbar support cushion, and a built-in adjustable headrest. We didn’t love the lateral armrest adjustment, which doesn’t have a lock and thus tended to slip under our hands when standing up out of the chair, but you can opt for armrests that only swivel and lift .

It’s hard to get all-day comfort in this price range, but the Ignition 2.0 is an exception. The seat cushion is thick and soft—an improvement over the slightly too-firm seats of our previous budget pick, the HON Exposure, and the similarly priced Fully Desk Chair. You don’t have to break the seat in, and at the end of a long day, the seat still feels supportive, unlike too-soft seats that you’d sink into over time. We liked the springy mesh seat back, and we think the Ignition 2.0’s armrests, which consist of a soft plastic with light cushioning, will last a while.

For people looking to skirt the traditional office chair aesthetic altogether or who want to try something new, here’s another chair with a unique approach to comfort and posture. The idea is that it’s easier to sit upright for longer, and the kneeling position ensures you won’t slouch. There are plenty of executive-style rolling chairs that incorporate ergonomic features, but your choices don’t end there. Kneeling and balance ball chairs can function as your primary chair or as a substitute throughout the day.

The link between color temperature and productivity is not concrete, however; some people may prefer warm lighting for long work hours, depending on their temperament and the tasks of their job. Even a perfect ergonomic chair can cause you to slouch if it’s not properly suited for your desk—for example, if the armrests can’t slide under your table. Make sure you’re choosing the right chair for your needs and your office setup.

Mead’s gum-sealed security envelopes wouldn’t budge, but Mead’s Press-it Seal-it, Staples’s Easy Close, and Columbian’s Self-Seal envelopes all opened and resealed. We placed printed documents in each of the envelopes and held them up to a sunlit window. The Office Depot envelope was the only one that prevented us from reading the text inside. We expected all the security envelopes to pass this test, and we were surprised to discover that envelopes from the most popular brands, Columbian and Mead, were the easiest to see through. The popular chisel-tip marker puts down plenty of pigment, remains easy to erase, and lasts a long time even when abused.

But even the best arm support can prevent optimal posture if it’s too high to fit under your desk, causing you to slouch to reach the keyboard. The Steelcase Leap was once our pick for the best office chair and later became our runner-up. It’s still an excellent chair with a solid amount of adjustments and a comfortable back, but most of our testers didn’t think anything about the Leap separated it from the Gesture or Aeron. If you find one used for a good price, if you prefer the look of the Leap, or if you just don’t need the arm adjustability of the Gesture, the Leap might serve you well. Keep in mind, however, that in long-term testing we’ve found that the Gesture’s and Aeron’s seat comfort is better. The best office chairs provide great lumbar support, with extra padding for the natural curve in your lower back.
